How to split income in a household budget calculator Pakistan

A household budget starts with money you can actually spend this month: salary in hand, a business drawing, rent you receive, or support that arrives on a date you can count on. Put that total in income. Then split it across the boxes that match Pakistani household life: housing (rent or the monthly portion of a home loan), food, transport, utilities, education, healthcare, debt repayments, entertainment, shopping, savings, and anything else.

The savings box is both a plan and a number in the total. Money you move to a savings account is counted in total expenses, because it has left the spending balance, and it is also reported on its own as a savings percentage of income. Do not type the same transfer in savings and again in other, or you will count it twice.

Savings percentage and the status labels

Remaining money is income minus every expense box, including savings. Remaining percent is that leftover divided by income. Savings percent is only the savings box divided by income. They answer different questions. Remaining percent tells you whether the plan still has slack. Savings percent tells you how much of income you deliberately set aside.

The status line uses a simple rule inside this tool, not a regulation. If remaining is below zero, the status is over budget. If remaining is at least 20 percent of income, the status is healthy. Otherwise the status is balanced: you are not in the red, but the cushion is thinner than that 20 percent line. The 20 percent line is a target this page uses so the label means something. It is not a required savings rate.

A worked month

Income PKR 1,00,000. Housing PKR 30,000, food PKR 20,000, transport PKR 10,000, utilities PKR 5,000, entertainment PKR 5,000, savings PKR 20,000, and the other boxes zero. Total expenses are PKR 90,000. Remaining is PKR 10,000, which is 10 percent of income, so the status is balanced. Savings are PKR 20,000, which is 20 percent of income.

Change only housing to PKR 50,000 and total expenses become PKR 1,10,000. Remaining is minus PKR 10,000 and the status turns to over budget. The savings percent is still 20, which shows why you should read status and savings together. A transfer to savings does not fix a month whose other bills already exceed income.

What to do when the status is over budget

Start with the largest boxes, usually housing, food and debt, and see which one can move this month. A rupee cut in a large box changes the status faster than skipping a small entertainment line. If the over-budget amount is a one-off, such as school admission, note it in other and do not treat it as the new normal next month. If it repeats, the plan needs a higher income or a smaller fixed bill.

Debt repayments belong in the debt box, not mixed into housing, so you can see the instalment on its own. The loan EMI page on Batooli can help you check that instalment, but this budget form will not calculate markup for you.

Limitations

This is a monthly planning sheet, not official advice and not a picture of your bank. It ignores cash you already hold, annual bills unless you type a monthly share, and money that arrives late. If you are dealing with debt stress, talk to your lender or a qualified adviser rather than relying on a status label.

Frequently asked questions

Why is savings inside total expenses?

Because that money is no longer available to spend. It is still shown separately as a savings percentage of income so you can judge the target on its own.

What savings percentage should a household aim for?

This page marks a month healthy when at least 20 percent of income is still unspent after every box, including savings. That is a planning target, not a rule. Pick a percentage you can repeat.

What does over budget mean here?

Remaining is negative: the boxes add up to more than income. Cut a category, lower the savings transfer, or raise the income figure until remaining is zero or above.

Should I enter take-home pay or gross pay?

Use the cash that reaches you this month. Tax already deducted is not spending you still have to assign, so starting from take-home avoids counting it twice.

How do I handle a bill that comes once a year?

Divide it by 12 and put that share in the closest box every month, or park it in savings until the bill is due. Typing the whole annual bill in one month will mark that month over budget.

Can two people share one budget?

Yes. Add both incomes into the income box and list the household costs once. If you keep separate cash, run the form twice and do not enter the same rent in both.
