How a sales tax calculator applies the rate

You enter the amount before tax. The tool reads the rate for the country, state or province you pick, multiplies the amount by that rate, and divides by 100. That product is the tax. The total is the amount plus the tax. If several taxes apply, as they can in Canada or when you add a US local rate, each part is worked out and then added into one combined rate before the same multiplication.

The arithmetic example below uses 10 percent only so the steps are easy to follow. It is not the rate for Pakistan, the UK, the UAE, or any US state. If you type 10,000 and the rate you are testing is 10 percent, tax is 1,000 and the total is 11,000. On the real form, use the rate the page shows for your place, then check that rate with the authority listed under Sources.

Pakistan GST and provincial sales tax

Pakistan’s federal sales tax on goods is administered by FBR, and it is not the same thing as the sales tax on services charged by a province. A shop selling goods and a studio selling services can face different authorities and different rates, including reduced rates and exemptions. This page’s Pakistan profile is a single standard-rate estimate for a quick total. It does not know your HS code, your provincial service category, or whether the supply is exempt.

Use it to sketch an invoice, then open the FBR site, and the relevant provincial revenue authority if you sell services, and match the rate to the supply. If the rate has moved, type the current one with the custom profile rather than trusting a saved screenshot.

VAT calculator notes for the UK and UAE

The United Kingdom and the UAE both use a value-added style tax on many supplies, with a standard rate and with lower or zero rates for some items. This calculator applies one rate to the whole amount you type. It cannot split a basket into standard-rated and zero-rated lines. In the UK, confirm the rate with HMRC. In the UAE, confirm it with the Federal Tax Authority. If your invoice has mixed rates, calculate each line with its own rate and add the totals yourself.

Canada GST, HST, PST and QST

Canada does not use one national total. Pick the province or territory. The tool adds the GST, HST, PST or QST lines that the profile stores for that province and shows them as separate parts. Some provinces fold the tax into HST. Others charge GST and a provincial tax side by side. Quebec’s provincial tax is QST. Always read the parts list, not only the combined percent, and confirm the current set with the Canada Revenue Agency and the province.

United States: state tax plus local tax

US sales tax is chosen by state, and many cities and counties add a local rate on top. Pick the state first. The state figure is only the statewide part stored in the tool. If the receipt or the state’s lookup shows a city or county add-on, type that percent in the local rate box. The total rate is the state part plus the local part. Five US states have no statewide sales tax; local taxes can still exist, so a zero state line is not a promise that the city charges nothing.

There is no single federal sales tax to add on top of the state. Do not invent a local rate. Look it up for the place of the sale, or ask the seller which rate was charged.

Limitations

Rates change, exemptions exist, and this page is not official advice. It will not prepare a return. Confirm the figure with FBR, your provincial authority, CRA, HMRC, the UAE FTA, or your US state department of revenue before you charge a customer or file.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pakistan GST the same as provincial sales tax on services?

No. FBR sales tax on goods and a province’s sales tax on services are different systems. This page applies one rate to the amount you type and does not choose the authority for you.

How do I handle UK or UAE VAT when some items are zero-rated?

Run the standard-rated amount on its own, leave the zero-rated amount out of that calculation, and add the two totals. The form cannot apply two rates to one amount.

What is the difference between GST, HST, PST and QST in Canada?

GST is the federal goods and services tax. HST is a combined federal-provincial tax in some provinces. PST is a separate provincial sales tax. QST is Quebec’s provincial tax. Pick the province and read each line the tool lists.

Why does the United States need a local rate box?

The state list is only the statewide part. City and county add-ons are extra. Type the local percent from the place of sale if there is one.

Does the result include tax that was already inside the price?

No. The amount box is the price before tax. If your price is already tax-inclusive, this total will charge tax again.

What if the rate on screen looks out of date?

Check the authority in the Sources section and, if needed, switch to the custom profile and type the rate from that official page. Do not treat the stored rate as a filing figure.
