Common formulas
X% of Y = X × Y ÷ 100
X is what % of Y = X ÷ Y × 100
Percentage increase = (New − Old) ÷ Old × 100
Marks % = Obtained ÷ Total × 100

Increase and decrease answers always use the original value as the base. That is different from percentage difference, which uses the average of two values and is useful when neither number is the “starting” point.
Students often need obtained ÷ total × 100 for exam scores. Shoppers use discount amount and final price. Sellers use cost and selling price to see profit or loss percentage.

Multiply the percentage by the number, then divide by 100. For example, 20% of 500 is 20 × 500 ÷ 100 = 100.
Divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100. For example, 100 is 100 ÷ 500 × 100 = 20% of 500.
Percentage increase compares a new value with an old baseline. Percentage difference compares two values using their average as the base, so neither value is treated as the original.
Divide obtained marks by total marks and multiply by 100. For example, 425 ÷ 500 × 100 = 85%.
Discount amount equals original price × discount% ÷ 100. Final price equals original price minus discount amount.
Subtract cost price from selling price to get profit or loss, then divide that amount by cost price and multiply by 100.
Yes. All modes accept decimal numbers. Results use precise arithmetic and clear rounding for display.
