Marks & Grade Calculator

Enter subject totals and obtained marks to get overall percentage, grade, pass/fail status, and a subject-wise breakdown — or find the marks you still need for a target percentage.

Calculator

Add subjects for a grade, or switch to target mode to see marks still needed. Overall percentage uses combined totals — not an average of subject percentages.

Example board bands for Matric / FSc. Pass mark is 33% in each subject. Overall Pass requires every subject to pass. Confirm the current gazette for your board.

How marks and grade are calculated

This marks and grade calculator adds every subject’s obtained marks and every subject’s total marks, then converts the combined totals into a percentage. That approach stays accurate when subjects use different maximums.

Overall percentage formula

Percentage = Total Obtained Marks ÷ Total Maximum Marks × 100

Do not average subject percentages when totals differ.

Marks needed for a target T%

Needed = (T ÷ 100) × (Current total + Remaining total) − Current obtained

Grading scale

The table follows the selected preset. Board presets marked (verify) are examples only.

Percentage Grade Description
80–100 A+ Outstanding
70–79.99 A Excellent
60–69.99 B Very Good
50–59.99 C Good
40–49.99 D Fair
33–39.99 E Pass
Below 33 F Fail

Example board bands for Matric / FSc. Pass mark is 33% in each subject. Overall Pass requires every subject to pass. Confirm the current gazette for your board.

Worked example

English 85/100, Mathematics 72/100, Computer 91/100:

Total obtained = 85 + 72 + 91 = 248

Total marks = 100 + 100 + 100 = 300

Percentage = 248 ÷ 300 × 100 = 82.67%

Grade = A on the default scale

Target example: 340/400 so far, remaining paper 100, target 80%. Need (0.80 × 500) − 340 = 60 marks on the last paper.

Why totals matter more than averaging percentages

If one subject is 80/100 and another is 45/50, the correct overall result is 125 ÷ 150 × 100 = 83.33%. Averaging 80% and 90% would incorrectly give 85%.

Frequently asked questions

How is overall percentage calculated?

Overall percentage is total obtained marks divided by total maximum marks, then multiplied by 100. Subjects with different totals are weighted correctly — we do not average subject percentages.

What grading scale does this calculator use?

Pakistan defaults to the Matric / FSc board example: 80 / 70 / 60 / 50 / 40 / 33 with a 33% pass mark. You can switch to University / General percentage (50% pass) or another region’s example scale. Always confirm your board gazette.

Can I enter decimal marks?

Yes. Total and obtained marks accept decimal values, and results use precise arithmetic before display rounding.

What if obtained marks are higher than total marks?

That row is invalid. Obtained marks cannot exceed total marks, and the calculator will not produce a result until the values are corrected.

Does every subject need the same total marks?

No. You can mix totals such as 100 and 50. The overall percentage still uses combined obtained and combined total marks.

Is Pass/Fail always 50%?

No. The Pakistan Board (Matric/FSc) example uses a 33% pass mark in each subject, and overall Pass only if every subject passes. University / General percentage uses 50%. Treat results as a helper, not an official transcript.

What does “(verify)” next to a board preset mean?

Those bands are planning examples. Check Last verified on the page and confirm the current FBISE or BISE gazette before you treat a letter grade as official.

What is the grade label style option?

Some boards print A-1 / E / U and others print A+ / E / F. The cut-offs stay 80 / 70 / 60 / 50 / 40 / 33 — only the letters change.

How do I find marks needed for a target percentage?

Open “Marks needed for target %”. Enter marks you already have, the remaining paper total, and the overall percentage you want. The tool solves: needed = (target ÷ 100) × (current total + remaining total) − current obtained.
