What a provident fund calculator is estimating
Government employees and many private workers in Pakistan contribute to a provident fund from basic pay. Some employers add a matching amount. This page projects a future balance from an opening balance, monthly basic, either a percent of basic or fixed monthly amounts, an annual interest percent you type, a number of years, and an optional yearly rise in basic. It is a projection, not the ledger at the Accountant General’s office.
Employee and employer money are kept separate while they are calculated, then added together each month. You can set the employer percent or the employer fixed amount to zero when the fund is employee-only, which is common for GPF. A private fund that has both sides should have both boxes filled from the scheme rules, not from a guess.
How interest is added each month
The annual percent you type is divided by 12 and then by 100 to get a monthly rate. Each month the tool adds that month’s employee and employer contribution to the balance, then adds interest on the balance after the contribution. It does not use a published GPF interest rate of its own. The interest box starts with a sample so the form is not empty. Replace it with the rate in your fund’s latest notification before you rely on a long projection.
One-month illustration, using numbers you would type: opening balance zero, basic PKR 50,000, employee 10 percent, employer zero, annual interest 12 percent, salary increase zero. The month’s contribution is PKR 5,000. Interest is 1 percent of that balance, which is PKR 50. Closing balance is PKR 5,050. The 12 percent is only the sample input in this illustration. It is not an official GPF rate.
Salary increases and a longer projection
If you enter an annual salary increase, basic pay steps up at the end of every 12 months and later contributions use the new basic. Percent mode then contributes a percent of that higher basic. Fixed mode ignores the salary increase for the contribution amount, because you typed a rupee figure that does not move unless you change it. Interest keeps compounding on the running balance either way.
A multi-year result is the same month repeated: contribute, add interest, and bump basic on each anniversary of the projection. Opening balance is included from the first month, so a fund you have already built is not ignored. The closing balance is the figure to read. Total contributions and total interest are shown so you can see how much of the end balance came from money paid in and how much from the rate you typed.
What happens on retirement
On retirement or leaving service, the usual outcome is that the subscriber is paid the balance standing in the fund, subject to the rules of that fund, any advances still outstanding, and tax treatment in force at the time. This calculator does not subtract an outstanding advance, does not apply tax, and does not know your date of birth or qualifying service. Take the closing balance to your accounts office and ask them to match it to the ledger.
If you are comparing GPF with a pension, run the pension page separately. A provident fund balance is a lump that has been saved. A pension is usually a monthly payment. They are not substitutes inside this form.
Mistakes and limitations
Limitations: this is not official advice and not the Finance Division’s calculator. Fund rules, the notified interest, and the final payment voucher control what you receive. Check the latest official notification before you plan retirement cash from this estimate.
- Leaving the sample interest rate in place and treating the result as the government rate.
- Putting gross salary in the basic box when the subscription is a percent of basic only.
- Counting an employer contribution that your scheme does not actually pay.
- Expecting the tool to replay a missing subscription or a withdrawal you took last year. Put today’s real opening balance in instead.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the employee and employer amounts?
The employee amount is deducted from pay. The employer amount is extra money the organisation adds, if the scheme says so. GPF subscriptions are often employee-only, so the employer box can stay at zero.
Does this page know the current GPF interest rate?
No. You type the annual percent. Look up the latest Finance Division notification and replace the sample rate before you trust a long projection.
When is interest applied?
After that month’s contribution has been added to the balance. The monthly rate is the annual percent divided by 12.
What should I read when I retire?
The closing balance, then ask the accounts office to adjust advances and the official interest. The page does not issue a final payment figure.
Why did the contribution jump after twelve months?
In percent mode, basic pay increases by the annual salary-increase percent at each 12-month boundary, and the subscription follows the new basic.
Can I start from the balance already in my fund?
Yes. Put that figure in opening balance. The projection continues from there instead of from zero.
