Date Difference Calculator

Calculate the exact time between two dates in years, months, days, weeks and total days — plus weekdays and weekends. Free, accurate and easy to use.

Calculator

Choose a start date and end date. Exclusive mode is the default; turn on inclusive to count both dates.

Results use calendar dates only (no time of day). Exclusive mode is the default. Business days currently treat Monday–Friday as working days with Saturday and Sunday as weekends; holiday exclusion can be added later.

Default is exclusive: same dates = 0 days. Inclusive adds 1 day so the same date becomes 1 day.

How date difference is calculated

This date difference calculator measures completed calendar years, then months, then days between two dates. That handles different month lengths and leap years correctly — unlike approximations such as days ÷ 30 or days ÷ 365.

Method

1. Count full years from the earlier date to the later date.

2. Count full months remaining after those years.

3. Count the leftover days.

Total days = exact calendar-day span (exclusive by default). Total weeks = total days ÷ 7; remaining days are the leftover after complete weeks.

Inclusive vs exclusive days

Exclusive mode (default) counts the difference between the dates. If both dates are the same, the result is 0 days. Inclusive mode counts both the start and end date, so the same date becomes 1 day — equal to the exclusive total plus one.

01 January 2026 → 01 January 2026

Exclusive = 0 days · Inclusive = 1 day

01 January 2026 → 02 January 2026

Exclusive = 1 day · Inclusive = 2 days

Business days and weekends

Weekdays are Monday through Friday. Weekend days are Saturday and Sunday. Business days currently match weekdays. Holiday exclusion is supported in the calculation layer for a future holiday list — no country-specific public holidays are hard-coded.

Example

Start date: 01 January 2026

End date: 01 October 2026

Difference = 9 months, 0 days

Total days = 273 · Total weeks = 39 · Remaining days = 0

Frequently asked questions

How is the date difference calculated?

Years, months and days use calendar arithmetic between the two dates — the same approach as counting completed years, then months, then leftover days. Total days is the exact calendar-day span, not days divided by 30 or 365.

What is the difference between exclusive and inclusive days?

Exclusive (default) counts the span between the dates, so the same start and end date is 0 days. Inclusive counts both the start and end dates, so the same date becomes 1 day (exclusive difference + 1).

How are business days calculated?

Weekdays are Monday through Friday. Weekend days are Saturday and Sunday. Business days currently match weekdays; a holiday exclusion option can be added later without hard-coding country holidays.

What if the end date is earlier than the start date?

The calculator does not show a negative result. It reports that the end date is earlier, and you can swap the dates or view the absolute difference between them.

Does this handle leap years and February 29?

Yes. Calendar month and year boundaries — including February in leap and non-leap years — are handled by Carbon’s date arithmetic.
