Formula

Addition and subtraction need a common denominator. a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) / bd, then divide the top and bottom by their highest common factor.

Multiplication: a/b × c/d = ac / bd.

Division: a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c. The second denominator cannot be zero.

Solved example

A student finishes 3/4 of a worksheet, then another 1/2 of the same worksheet is assigned as extra.

3/4 + 1/2 = 3/4 + 2/4 = 5/4.

5/4 is the mixed number 1 1/4. That is more than one full worksheet, by a quarter.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 3/4 + 1/2 not 4/6?

You cannot add the tops and the bottoms separately. Half is 2/4, so 3/4 + 2/4 = 5/4.

Does the calculator keep the fraction exact?

Yes. It uses whole-number numerators and denominators, then simplifies. A decimal is only an extra view of that exact fraction.

What happens if a denominator is 0?

The calculation stops. A fraction with denominator 0 is not a number, so there is no result to show.

Is 5/4 the same as 1 1/4 on a school answer sheet?

Yes. 5/4 is an improper fraction and 1 1/4 is the mixed number. Both name the same amount. Follow the form your teacher asked for.
